Hypericaceae

Defining Characteristics

• Simple, opposite or whorled leaves, often with translucent glandular dots or dark glandular dots on margins
• Flowers typically with 5 yellow petals and numerous stamens , often bundled into 3–5 fascicles
• Superior ovary developing into a dry capsule
• Plants often produce hypericin and related naphthodianthrone pigments

Notable Genera

• Hypericum (St. John's wort — ~500 species, the dominant genus)
• Triadenum (marsh St. John's wort)

Notes

Separated from the broader Clusiaceae/Guttiferae based on molecular evidence. Hypericum is by far the largest and most widespread genus. Several species are medicinally important, particularly H. perforatum for its antidepressant properties.
