turion

A specialized, compact vegetative bud produced by aquatic plants for asexual reproduction and overwintering. Turions detach from the parent plant, sink to the sediment, remain dormant through unfavorable conditions, and germinate when conditions improve — functioning as a survival and dispersal strategy.
