stipule

A small, usually paired appendage found at the base of a leaf petiole where it attaches to the stem. Stipules vary widely in form: leaf-like, scale-like, spiny (as in Robinia), or fused to the petiole (as in Rosaceae). Their presence or absence is an important diagnostic character.
